Maldives experienced the effects of the Tsunami generated by the earthquake off the cost of Sumatra on 26 th December 2004 and as a result, the infrastructure on Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort has been severley damaged.
Even though the devastation was massive, there were no causalities and all guests and staff are safe and in good health. The guests were immediately evacuated and accommodated in various resorts and in Male’ until their onward flights back home were confirmed. There were some guests who opted to stay on in the Maldives till the end of their holiday and we made arrangements for them to be given suitable accommodation. Following the evacuation, the resort has been closed down until the necessary reconstruction
Owing to the extend of the damage, we are compelled to close down the resort until 31 st October 2005, 10 months during which time, we will develop the infrastructure to meet the standards.
The opening date for Olhuveli beach & Spa Resort is 01 st November 2005.
On a lighter note, the Ministry has confirmed that the Maldives Tourism Industry has returned to normalcy, albeit with fewer beds since some of the resorts have been closed down for restoration following the tsunami.
The after effects of the Tsunami are not so severe on the tourism industry of the Maldives because of the unique make-up of our resorts. Each resort is developed in its own island with its own infra structure; own electricity, sewage system and water supply. Because of this unique aspect, the risks usually associated with such disasters are none. There is enough food supply “on-site” to sustain both guests and staff for atleast a month.
Also as a precautionary measure, the nation’s border is now being strictly controlled to avoid introduction of diseases from neighboring islands.
We hope to welcome you back to Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort, after the re-opening!
Thank you.
